Assisi 2026: Honoring the Living Legacy of St. Francis

This year marks a profound milestone for our region and the world. 2026 observes the 8th centenary of the passing of St. Francis of Assisi (1226–2026), a saint whose message of peace, equality, and environmental stewardship feels more urgent today than ever before.

To commemorate this anniversary, a rare and extraordinary event is taking place: the exposition of the Saint’s remains in the Lower Basilica of Assisi, from February 22nd to March 22nd, 2026. This is a unique window for pilgrims and travelers alike to reflect on a man who fundamentally changed our understanding of the world.

A Message for the Modern Soul

St. Francis was a visionary far ahead of his time. In an era of conflict, he championed peace; while we struggle with the climate crisis, he preached a deep love for “Brother Sun” and “Sister Earth.” He was the radical voice who treated women as equals and addressed his letters not to kings, but to children—the true heirs of the future.

His philosophy was simple yet transformative: we are all made of the same substance. Whether human, animal, or plant, we are interconnected. As Francis taught, “No one is saved alone; we are saved only together with the rest of humanity and the rest of Creation.”
